BANGALORE:
Another case of alleged brutal physical assault by policemen was presented to
the State Human Rights Commission on Thursday by the South India Cell for Human
Rights Education and Monitoring (SICHREM).
Manjunatha and Jagdish,
two workers injured badly by the police, met the SHRC IGP Bipin Gopal Krishna on
Thursday with a plea to take action against the Nonavinakere police in Tiptur
taluk. On November 11, they summoned the duo to the station and informed them
that a case under Section 506 had been registered against them. The same day,
they were handcuffed and taken to the court though no one can be handcuffed
under Section 506.
Ten days later, Manjunath was beaten up so badly
that two fingers were fractured and many body parts critically injured. When
Manjunath's wife informed Jagdish about the incident, they got him admitted to
the Tiptur government hospital. Police officers allegedly went there and
threatened both of them to tell everyone that Manjunath had slipped and injured
himself.
According to the SICHREM complaint, the two were made to sit
naked in the lock-up with handcuffs. Manjunath is a coolie and couldn't work
because of his injuries and is now facing financial problems.
The
case has been registered with the SHRC and Gopal Krishna asked the DySP to
investigate the matter.
