AHMEDABAD: VHP president Ashok Singhal
on Friday met Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to convey his concerns about
the demolition of large number of temples in Gandhinagar and arrest of fellow
leader Ashwin Patel under sedition charges.
Singhal has been trying
to broker peace between the saffron outfits which are at loggerheads, sources in
the BJP and VHP said.
However, after the meeting Singhal refused to
talk to reporters waiting outside the CM's residence.
"The VHP
leader has conveyed his displeasure over the issue of demolition of temples in
state capital and also arrest of Ashwin Patel," Secretary of VHP Ranchhod
Bharwad said.
Yesterday, after visiting the sites where temples were
demolished, Singhal had criticised the BJP government, saying that it was
repeating the act of Mohammad Gazani, who had destroyed a number of temples in
medieval Gujarat.
The state government authorities are on demolition
spree in Gandhinagar as in past one month more than 200 'illegal' temples have
been razed here, Bharwad said adding, "Temples are being demolished in other
parts of the state also."
