CHANDIGARH: Yet another incident of
violence took place on Panjab University campus on Wednesday, but the only
difference this time was that the attack was not on a student, but on a
non-teaching employee.
Two youths from the law department, Vikramjit
Singh and Bhupinder Singh, allegedly attacked Anil Kumar, technical officer at
the computer science department around 11.30 am. This happened after the
technician reportedly refused to entertain their request for registration of
wi-fi system in their hostel.
The students not only slapped and
kicked him, but also broke the glass-doors in the department. Bhupinder Singh,
accused's friend, who had reached the department for help, received injuries on
his wrist after reportedly fell on the broken glasses. He was taken to GMSH-16,
from where he was referred to the PGI where a minor surgery was conducted on
him.
Anil said he asked the students to come after the lunch break,
but they kept on insisting that it should be done right then and on his refusal
Vikramjit attacked him.
However, Vikramjit claimed that besides
refusing to register his name for getting the wi-fi facility in the hostel, Anil
also misbehaved with them. "He abused and shoved me and only after that the
trouble started," he added.
PU police post in-charge Uday Pal said
they have recorded statements of both Anil and Vikramjit and they were arrested
under the provisions of sections 107/150 of the IPC and later released.
PU VC RC Sobti held a meeting with DSW Naval Kishore, chief security
officer, chairperson of the department Dharam Pal Sharma and president of
Non-teaching Employees' Union. It is learnt that it was resolved that an
official complaint would be filed by the PU against the students involved in the
incident. A departmental inquiry has also been marked.
