Amit Sarkar
(23), a resident of Haridaspur village in Gajole, was having an affair with
18-year-old Arpita Sarkar for a long time. As
Amit was the son of a poor farmer
and was unemployed, Arpita's family was against the match.
But the couple got married
secretly in July.
The news
came as a shock to Arpita's family. According to Amit's mother Menoka, police
started harassing them after the girl's father Santosh Sarkar, a rich
businessman and a local Trinamool leader, lodged a kidnapping complaint. The
couple went into hiding to avoid
trouble.
Menoka met SP Satyjit
Bandyopadhyay on Tuesday and complained that police were now pressuring her to
disclose where the couple was living right now. The SP in turn assured Menoka
that he would look into the matter and see to it that Gajole police did not
harass her any more.
The girl's
father Santosh, however, denied that he had threatened Amit. "I asked them to
return my daughter. I have sought police help to trace her as she disappeared
within a few days of meeting Amit," he said.
