KOLKATA:
A youth poured kerosene on a girl at Garden Reach on Tuesday afternoon. Her only
fault: she had spurned his
advances.
Faiyaz Alam (23), a
resident of Samlal Lane in Garden Reach and a zari worker, had reportedly been
trying to woo his next-door neighbour, Nagma Nigar, for the last few months.
Nigar, reportedly had refused him all along.
Around noon on Tuesday, Alam
went to Nigar's home when she was alone. Her parents had gone to visit some
relatives, and her younger siblings were away at school. He again proposed to
her, and she refused yet
again.
That was the last straw.
In a sudden fit of rage, Alam snatched some kerosene that was kept in a corner
of Nigar's room and poured it on her. Before the girl could even shout out, he
set fire on her and ran away.
Nigar's neighbours, who first
noticed her crying for help, managed to douse the fire. They informed her family
members and rushed her to SSKM Hospital. She has suffered 90% burn
injuries.
"For the last few
months, Alam had been trying to persuade Nigar, but his efforts were in vain.
Alam went to Nigar's house out of desperation," said a local
resident.
Police was informed
in the evening and Faiyaz was arrested. A case of attempt to murder has been
started against him.
"We have
seized the can of kerosene and the match box from the spot. We are conducting a
probe," said a senior officer.
