Security checks for MPs? 23 Jul 2008, 1511 hrs IST,TIMESOFINDIA.COM |

The
cash-for-vote scandal that dominated Parliament proceedings on Tuesday has also
brought into focus the parliamentary privileges that allowed
three
BJP MPs to enter the House with huge amounts of
cash
undetected.
Not frisked by
officials nor required to put anything through the scanner at the entrance, MPs
can carry just about anything into the House - mobiles, gadgets, even arms, and
in this case, obscene sums of
money.
And while bringing
‘harmless’ currency inside Parliament is not a security risk, this
particular privilege can clearly be misused at another time.
Is the privilege available to
MPs more important than security? As Members of Parliament should they be exempt
from security protocols? Or should checks of MPs be made mandatory in all
high-security premises including Parliament?
